If you have children, then you sometimes do things in desperation that end up being a family tradition.
Three Best Things started when my then 5 year old son came home from kindergarten with the 'life has ended'; 'it's the worst day ever' attitude. This carried on through supper and on to bedtime.
In an effort to ease his suffering (and mine - nothing like a 5 year old with attitude to spoil your day), I challenged him to list 3 good things that happened to him that day.
He rose to the challenge and truthfully I can't remember what those 3 things were but we have been doing the list for 7 years now - EVERY night - by phone if necessary.
Whether you consider it prayer, giving thanks, indulgence........what it has done for us is kept the communication open and honest; kept us up to date on what we as a family consider important; given us a reminder to not take life too seriously and when one of the 3 best things is a good joke we heard during the day - a good laugh before drifting off to sleep.
